Work-related deaths from being exposed to asbestos have increased in British Columbia for the past 25 years, a trend that “could continue well into the foreseeable future,” according to provincial safety regulator WorkSafeBC. Remodeling and demolishing older structures continues to put workers at risk of asbestos exposure, where illness and death may occur decades later. The five-year average asbestos-related death rate has nearly quadrupled since 1990.
